The main distinction between the Panoramic Sunroof and the Glass Roof is that the Panoramic Sunroof opens while the Glass Roof, well, doesn’t.īecause the Panoramic Sunroof needs room for its motor housing, railings, and such, the sides of the ceiling next to the driver and passenger side doors were fairly wide before opening up for the glass part of the ceiling. Likely, somebody on the internet is still arguing about the semantics of this right now. Further adding to name confusion, the Panoramic Sunroof was technically what some automotive circles would call a moonroof: a sliding glass pane that always lets in light by default. After all, Panoramic Sunroof and Glass Roof sound exactly the same to anyone who hasn’t seen the two in action (aren’t they both made of glass for a panoramic view, after all? Don’t they both let in the sun?). Tesla added a Glass Roof option in 2016, and some confusion over the roof names resulted. Though many buyers were quite happy with this setup, the Panoramic Sunroof was unable to avoid the reliability issues that plague sunroofs and moonroofs in general. Basically functioning like a spoiler roof (also called a tilt and slide), Tesla’s Panoramic Sunroof popped up and slid back along its tracks on the top of the car while a small windscreen (designed to reduce drag) deployed at the front.
Fully-adjustable settings from the touchscreen menu (or the steering wheel in some cases) allowed the Panoramic Sunroof to open to any point from just enough to vent to fully open. The Panoramic Sunroof made its debut on the Model S in 2012 along with only one other option, a traditional aluminum Body-Colored Roof. Let’s take a few minutes to explore how the Panoramic Sunroof functions, the difference between it and Tesla’s famous Glass Roof, which Tesla models had the Panoramic Sunroof option, and how you can find one for sale. Also, since some confusion is circulating out there among used Tesla listings about what a Panoramic Sunroof on a Tesla actually is, it’s worth knowing the details so you can be sure about what you’re getting before you buy.
